Antique French "Ship's Quarter Deck" Automaton Clock from the Industrial Series, Circa 1890

This remarkable antique French automaton clock, part of the prestigious Industrial Series, is designed to resemble a ship's quarter deck. The bronze and silvered case intricately mimics the deck, complete with a functional binnacled compass and a quartermaster at the helm. Flanking the quartermaster are finely crafted lamps with a three-colored finish (bronze, copper, and silver) that are gimbaled for realism.

The quarterdeck is exquisitely modeled with a gilt bronze oak deck, and patinated bronze bollards are positioned behind and to the sides of the quartermaster. The helm, held by the quartermaster, features a patinated rim and gilt bronze spokes. Descending the steps to the main deck, a young sailor is depicted carrying a coil of rope. Between the sailor and the steps is a covered companionway with a slatted top, flanked by gilt bronze and silvered portholes.

This entire scene is set on a stepped black marble base with gilt bronze bracket feet. The clock features a two-train French movement, stamped GLT for Guilmet and numbered 1653, which strikes the hours and halves on a gong. The helmsman forms the top of the compound pendulum, rocking back and forth with each tick.

This fascinating piece, dating from around 1890, stands 13 inches high, 11.6 inches wide, and 9 inches deep (32.5 cm by 28.75 cm by 22.5 cm), making it a stunning example of French Industrial Series clocks.

A perfect addition for collectors and enthusiasts of antique automaton clocks, this piece captures the nautical spirit with remarkable detail and craftsmanship.
