Gérald Genta designed the two most consequential luxury sport watches of the 20th century — the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus — and then, in 1969, founded his own atelier in Geneva to apply the same independent thinking to his own brand. The Gerald Genta brand produced some of the most architecturally ambitious watches of the 1980s and 1990s: integrated-bracelet sport pieces, jump-hour complications, retrograde indications, and the famously irreverent Disney-themed series. Bulgari acquired the brand in 2000, retired the original line, and reopened it as a heritage label. At Almaz Jewelry in Vienna we hold an estate selection of the Genta-era pieces collectors actually pursue.
The References That Matter
The Retro family — including the Retro Sport in our case — pioneered the retrograde-minutes-and-jump-hour display in a luxury sport context, with a curved dial that became one of Genta's signatures. The Arena brought the architect's sport watch language into the late-1990s era. The Mickey Mouse jump-hour series, derided by the watchmedia at launch and now firmly collector-grade, applied the same complication to a deliberately playful dial. Every piece is recognisable as Genta's own thinking, distinct from the maisons he designed for.
Why Estate Gerald Genta
The Bulgari-era Gerald Genta production is a separate market from the original Geneva-era pieces, and most serious collectors pursue the latter. Original-era Genta references in good condition appreciate steadily on the secondary market, and the supply is finite. Almaz authenticates each piece against archive reference material; case, dial, and movement must be matched and period-correct before listing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Gerald Genta and post-acquisition Bulgari production? The original Geneva atelier produced the brand from 1969 until Bulgari's 2000 acquisition; post-2000 production is Bulgari's. Collectors generally focus on the original era.
Are Gerald Genta movements in-house? Some are — the brand developed proprietary jump-hour and retrograde modules — while base calibres on simpler references typically come from established Swiss suppliers, often finished beyond their base specification.
