Houdin Mystery Clock

A 19th C gilt bronze mystery clock. The bell striking movement number '81' to the back plate, with silk suspension pendulum, the 11.5 cm glass dial above with single gilt arrow hand operated by a worm gear at the top of one of the twin supports below, the case with reeded scroll foot supporting a rectangular plinth below a bombe sided section applied with a putto to the front, surmounted by a short column flanked by gryphons, the whole raised on a later wooden plinth, 17 in. (43 cm).

As the movements for these clocks were invisible to the naked eye, onlookers were enchanted by the pieces, coming up with their own theories on how the hand moved.Robert Houdin's celebrity grew as he preformed private shows for Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace and exhibited his inventions at the Universal Exposition of 1855. Today Robert-Houdin is considered the father of modern magic and a French national hero.
