Light folds inside the pearl rather than skating across it — a quiet, almost lunar luminosity that Mikimoto has chased since Kokichi Mikimoto first cultured an Akoya in 1893. Here, a single 15-millimetre Akoya is suspended in a frame of brilliant-cut diamonds and 18-karat white gold, the metal worked so finely it disappears under the stone-set bezel. The diamonds do not compete with the pearl; they describe it, the way a thin silver line might describe the moon in an Anglo-Japanese woodblock. Worn open at the collar, the pendant reads as restraint; worn against a black silk shirt, it reads as a small, deliberate sun. It is a Vienna piece in the proper sense — confident enough to be quiet.
