The Akoya stud is the silhouette Mikimoto has been refining since 1893 — a single cultured pearl held close to the ear, set on the smallest amount of metal that physics will allow. Worn here in a matched pair of 8.0 to 8.5-millimetre Akoya, the studs sit on 18-karat white-gold posts with butterfly backs; the pearls are graded AA against Mikimoto's own scale for luster, surface, shape, colour, and nacre thickness, then matched as a pair before mounting.
