CIGA Design Wandering Hour Automatic Watch | Super Black Dial

CIGA Design reimagines the traditional reading of time through a Wandering Hour display, where a rotating hour disc travels together with the minute arm across an exceptionally deep Super Black dial. The result is a mechanical display that appears suspended in darkness, reducing the watch to time, movement and light.

At the centre of the design is CIGA Design's Wandering Hour Assembly. Instead of conventional hour and minute hands, a rotating hour disc moves in alignment with the minute indication, creating an unconventional yet intuitive way of reading time.

The mechanism is driven by the self-developed CD-08 caliber, built upon the proven Japanese Miyota 9000-series automatic movement platform to provide stable and consistent mechanical performance.

Its most dramatic visual feature is the Super Black dial, engineered to absorb 99.4% of light. By suppressing reflections and visual distractions, the near-black surface creates the illusion that the central wandering-hour mechanism is floating freely within the watch.

Surrounding the display is a sculpted 316L stainless steel case. Mirror-polished contours contrast with micro-sandblasted recessed surfaces, using changes in texture and light to define the otherwise minimalist round architecture.

At just 11.8 mm thick, the integrated lugless profile flows directly into the strap and allows the watch to sit close to the wrist. The streamlined construction reinforces the minimalist character of the dial while maintaining a distinctive sculptural presence.

For low-light visibility, Swiss Super-LumiNova illuminates the hour numerals and markers, bringing the wandering-hour mechanism to life after dark.

The defining feature of this CIGA Design watch is its unconventional interpretation of time. A rotating hour disc travels with the minute arm, replacing the familiar relationship between conventional hour and minute hands.

Against the light-absorbing Super Black dial, the mechanical assembly appears visually detached from its surroundings — creating a display in which the indication of time becomes the focal point.
